“You meet Christians who say they’re LGBTQ+ friendly but, unfortunately, there are also too many instances when you meet people who are religious and not so LGBTQ+ friendly.”
Stonewall Sports Champion Lizzie Williams is competing internationally as a British Athlete wheelchair racer. As a selected squad member for the British Athletics Academy ‘Parallel Success’, Williams is currently racing towards her dream of becoming a Paralympian. Having been born with a rare bone condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta – otherwise known as Brittle Bones – she says on her website that she “grew up surrounded by people who felt anxious being around [her] and unsure of what [she] was capable of”. She adds: “All they understood about me was that I could fracture by doing little or nothing at all, so nobody wanted to take the risk. I always knew I was able to do more.”
Starting her athletic career in the water, Williams swam for schools, town, county and regional area (south east), and progressed to attending training days with the GB team – but following a spine fracture, she found a new passion in wheelchair racing. Through her work as a Stonewall Champion, Williams advocates for inclusivity and accessibility in sport, because to her, “Sport has always meant freedom.”
